Fruits or how much is too much for your bird?

Well, there’s never a straight answer to that but fruit should still be part of your bird’s balanced diet. I recently came across a post on social media blaming fruits for a bird dying from a fatty liver disease, which could have potentially contributed but not necessary been the main cause, as other factors could have played a role. Unless the bird was fed fruit exclusively.

Misleading information like this can confuse parrot owners who may then stop feeding fruits to their birds completely, which is wrong, as those birds can miss out on all sorts of vitamins, minerals and fibre that the fruit can offer. The nutrient composition of fruit varies greatly among the different types and that’s why it is important to offer a variety of them to maximise the health benefits.

So how much fruit your bird should really consume? Well, we have asked the avian expert Dr. Stephanie Lamb DVM. Hope this will help you to make the right decision and if you are still unsure what fruit to feed or which fruit is ideal for a daily feed, then you can find a full list of safe fruit in our Parrot’s Fine Cuisine Cookbook and Nutritional Guide.
